TDI

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Congratulations to Steve and Mitch who completed their TDI Adv Nitrox and Deco procedures course while at the Lerm Dive Lodge this last weekend. The course included both theory and practical development, focusing mainly on the skills required to complete decompression dive using EAN up to 99% as a deco gas etc.

The weather was kind to us for all of the weekend with perfect conditions on Saturday. Guy, Warren and Katie were also along for a few rec dives, with Katie finishing her Advanced. Clare and Nathan visitors from Auckland come in for the day on Saturday with Hamish from Christchurch coming in for the Sunday dives.

This was the first weekend where we combined day trips with the live-a-shore option, this worked out really well and is a far better option that doing the long haul around and back from Picton in one day on a boat, especially when it is a bit bumpy.

If your interested in trying a bit of tec diving then our trips over the winter will give you the opportunity to learn about the kit and try a dive using a sling cylinder. If your unable to make one of our schdeuled trips, Dive Shack and Tec Dive in Auckland, Splash Gordon in Wellington and Awesome Scuba in Nelson have trips booked over the next few months, so if your living in these areas and want to join in on the action give the guys a call to see if they can fit you on one of their trips.

Great Weather

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Last weekend was a cracker weather wise, unfortunately not many took advantage of it by getting wet. Autumn is one of the best times for diving, with calmer conditions, visibly improving as plankton dies off and with the water temp still being reasonably warm and quite comfortable for wetsuit divers.

Looking at the long range forecast it looks like the weather is going to hold for a while yet, our TDI course and wreck dive weekend at the Lodge is nearly full this coming weekend, with only 2 spots left.

Congratulations to Steve and Georgie, Dive Club Marlborough members and regular divers, Georgie has just recently received the great news she is pregnant and both are looking forward to their first child. Don’t worry Georgie you will be back in the water before you know, Steve can stay home and look after the wee person while you come up for a well earned weekend or two.

Free Tech Workshops

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Over the next 5 months Go Dive will be running a series of free Tech Workshops that will coincide with our regular monthly dive trips to dive the Mikhail Lermontov.

Technical diving can seem daunting to the uninformed, especially when looking at the kit some wear. The facts are that you adapt your kit and techniques to the environment you are diving and your personal limitations, twin tanks are not necessary in many cases with a 5.5 litre sling enabling you to enjoy longer dives and safer dives on wrecks like the Lermontov.

For instance the engine room which is an overhead environment with no natural light is only a 30 metre dive, but to do it safely and to enjoy some bottom time, it is best done with a sling and 32% nitrox.

The workshops will be held on our weekend trips to the Lodge and include discussions on techniques and equipment, plus a guided dive into the the engine room.

Tec Dive New Zealand

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

It’s been a while since my last blog, mainly due to being based out at the Lermontov Lodge over the last week or so, where we have the luxury of no phone or internet connections.

Over Easter weekend Mel and Jamie from Tec Dive New Zealand in Auckland brought in a group of keen divers. Over the 4 days  most of the group crammed in 11 dives, mainly using twin cylinders. All the group got to visit the engine room, pool, Bolshoi lounge, Sadko bar, and some into the Leningrad restaurant. The weather was great up until Sunday, but given the short distance out to the wreck and returning to the Lodge between dives, this had no effect on our comfort or diving. The vis was pretty average on the outside but very nice inside.

Jamie, Mel, Peter and Steve continued on after the trip to dive the Riwaka resurgence and to push a bit further into Blue Creek, returning late in the week. I stayed on for a bit of a break with family and for a few dives later in the week when Mike and Nine arrived over. The weather then being prefect and the vis up to 10 metres.

The Lodge is certainly proving its worth and this winter we are developing the facility even further, with the addition of a big diesel generater, bigger compressor. Plus re-breather cylinders, backplates, wings, jet fins and on-site twin sets and deco cylinders, all the heavy stuff that costs to much these days to fly with.

October and November is nearly full with bookings with bookings right through to November 2011. So if you have a group keen on coming in for a trip, nows the time to book.
