Weekend Dive Report

Friday, October 30th, 2009

It looks like we are in for another good weekend weather wise.

Mid week conditions have been a bit windy and have resulted in a  heavy swell through the straight, I suggest diving in the Inner Sounds or Northern entrance, as I can’t see the Tory Channel side being to pleasant until Monday.

I spoke to a chap today who pulled a 6.5 kg cray out of Bay of Many Coves, so it shows you don’t have to go miles to get some Kai. The cray was put back by the way.

JAMES AND LYN ON THE LERMONTOV

We will be heading out both days for Rescue training and hope to hit Cape Jackson on Sunday. The water temp is coming up slowly, averaging around 14 at the moment, just about tropical.

Its going to be a nice weekend so get out and enjoy it. I still have a few items at half price so drop in for a look, including air fill concessions cards that give $3.00 fills.

Labour Weekend

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Finally after a long series of average weekends we were treated to a near perfect weekend out at the Lermontov Lodge.

Nathan & Ben owners of the the Napier Dive Center, Lyn, James, Georgie, Steve  and Captain Jack made up the group with Andrea head cookie and me as skipper. We enjoyed 10 dives over the three days, some fishing, underwater photography and plenty of eating freshly caught fish, crays and scallops.

Labour Weekend Group

Nathan, Ben, Lyn, James, Georgie and Captain Jack.

Visibility on the Lermontov was a bit below average for this time of year, but in saying that I had one of my most enjoyable dives on the wreck for a while when I guided James, Lyn, Steve and Georgie down to the bottom prop, on arrival at the top prop we were buzzed by what would have to be the biggest King Fish I have seen ever, on first sight thinking it was a blue shark it was that big.

As well as four dives on the Mikhail Lermontov we dived Black Head, Gannet Point, plus the wrecks of the Lastingham and Rangitoto, plus a scallop dive. The visibility on the Rangitoto was fantastic averaging around 12 plus metres. Ben scored some good fish on the end of his spear, while Nathan collected a few crays and Captain Jack caught 7 Blue Cod, all which went down a treat.

Thanks team for diving with Go Dive, to Captain Jack for your assistance in skippering and to Andrea for your excellent cooking and emergency run over the hill to Portage to pick up a spare part for the boat. I hope to see you all back again sometime in the near future.

Also thanks Steve for the photos not to sure about the one below though, not my best side.

Weekend Report

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Been a  huge day today with lucky customers picking up some real bargains in our "yellow dot" half price sale and a full load of divers out on an Inner Sounds tour, plus the arrival and departure to the lerm Lodge of our weekend dive group.

For the first time in 6 weeks we can expect a half reasonable weekend with the the sun shining for at least two thirds of it.

The local vis has improved after a lot of rain in the last 2 weeks, the Outer Sounds visibility is looking pretty good also, so this weekend is the time for a bit of wreck exploration etc.

I’m out to the Lodge first thing tomorrow and are looking forward to another relaxing weekend with good company. There is still a lot of bargains left in the sale so if you are keen flick me an email or give me a call, since I am away this weekend I am happy to extend the sale to mid next week, but after that the yellow dots come off.

I also start a PADI Rescue course next weekend, 5 on it so far, but room for a couple more. This is a fun course, I have run heaps of these over the years and have cooked up some good scenarios etc, so expect the unexpected if doing a rescue course with Go Dive.

Well have a good weekend, if you don’t then you obviously aren’t diving, so get out their and have some fun.

cheers & safe diving

LERMONTOV LODGE

Monday, October 5th, 2009

After being lured into thinking summer was early with a warm August and September, we are reminded this weekend that this is New Zealand and anything can happen weather wise.

After many years of operating scheduled tours in Marlborough, Sunday was the first day I have had to cancel a trip due to severe weather.  Port Gore was again our home for this weekends trip with the first of the group arriving early Thursday evening and heading into the Lodge to arrive around 8pm, even encountering a wild deer on the way in. The rest of the group come in on Friday and Saturday, we had the luck of having two reasonable days diving on the Lermontov with better vis than the week before.

Steve, Jorgie and Yolene finished their PADI Advanced Openwater course on the wreck, in preparation for Rescue training which was meant to commence on Sunday. I guided a couple of buddy teams through the engine room over the day and again were rewarded with the frequent comment that this was one of the best dives ever.

Sunday as predicted was very cold and windy so we unfortunately had to cancel the days diving due to surface conditions being to lumpy. Luckily the Lodge proved its versitilty over a live aboard as we could get out of the weather and make our way back to Picton by road.

Although we lost a days diving, the whole group had a great time and had a nice feed of fesh scallops and green lip mussels. George wasn’t as lucky with his fishing so we had to forgo the fresh Blue cod.

Thanks to everyone for making the weekend so enjoyable and for all your help, I look forward to catching up with you all again soon. Also thanks to Andrea and Mike, Go Dive staff for your help.
