WRECK WEEKEND
Monday, September 28th, 2009The Lermontov Lodge was put to the test this last weekend with a full complement of divers and staff. The dive group which come down from Auckland arrived late Thursday night and made the first half of the trip into the Portage Hotel where they stayed the first night, continuing their trip in the next day arriving in time for breakfast.
Unfortunately we couldn’t have experienced worse weather with a gale force South Easterly blowing all that day and into the next
. However this didn’t discourage most from diving on the Mikhail Lermontov.
The Lodge come into its own when returning after each dive, with Go Dives staff having kept the place warm and prepared a hot home cooked meal. Cylinders were filled and gas blended while guests relaxed and warmed up with a hot shower.
During the course of the weekend, Karl and Dean completed their TDI Advanced Nitrox and Deco procedures course with me. Other than a few unplanned entanglements in DSMB lines and buoyancy issues, everything went according to plan. Congratulations guys on a job well done and thanks for training with Go Dive.
The vis on the Lermontov was quite poor for this time of year, but in places like the engine room it was crystal, with nearly everyone getting a guided tour through at some stage. Aaron and Hamish who were diving twins and slings spent every dive exploring inside the wreck.
Saturday was our best day weather wise and dive wise, we managed to get four dives in with the last being on our house scallop bed, and finishing the trip off with scollop’s cooked in cream, garlic and white wine that were only 2 hours out of the sea. A barbecue finished the meal off, followed by a game of cards and a few drinks. You simply can’t get better than that any where.
Thanks guys and girls for diving with Go Dive and putting up with New Zealand’s inclement weather. Also to Guy for doing such a great job with the meals and making sure the ferrying backwards and forwards to the mooring went smoothly, I simply could not have done it without you mate.
I look forward to catching up with you all again sometime in the near future.
Safe Diving

PS: The scallop hound is up next weekend so scollop’s beware.
