A GREAT DAY ON THE LERMONTOV

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

With the weather being a bit off lately, we took the opportunity of a "weather window" to head out for the day to dive the Mikhail Lermontov. Conditions were perfect with not a breath of wind felt until we headed home late in the day.

BUOY OVER THE MIKHAIL LERMONTOV WRECK SITE

The aim of the dives for some were to complete a few orientation dives in preparation for future expeditions. Rigged with twin cylinders we visited the engine room, Bolshoi lounge, props, damage and pool. With a 50 minute bottom time we ended up with 22 minutes of decompression on our last dive, but it was well worth it with pretty good visibility, no current and toasty warm Drysuits.

Even though we have to be a bit more selective during the winter to what days we head out, it is well worth the effort as calm conditions and good visibility can make for a  experience.

June 13/14 are set aside for another wreck weekend, with 4 places left at this stage. Also keep an eye on the blog over the next few weeks, I am just putting the final touches to a new product that involves the Lermontov. I think you will be impressed.

Mikhail Lermontov

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Now the water is getting a bit cooler, the visibility will be getting a bit better on the Lermontov. Go Dive Marlborough, has a few wreck dive dates scheduled for day and live aboard trips to the Lerm over the next few months.

We will also be introducing an affordable shore based multi day option, with very comfortable on shore accommodation only 5 minutes from the wreck, so keep an eye out for trip dates.

WINDY WEATHER

Friday, May 15th, 2009

What happened to our nice Autumn weather, so much for May being sunny and settled.

Our Rust Weekend on the Lermontov and other wrecks has been put off until the weather sorts it’s self out a bit, hopefully in the near future. This weekend is looking like a repeat of the last two, with rain and wind being the main features.

With a 2 metre Northerly swell pumping in, the Outer Sounds are definitely out of bounds. For those who are keen on wetting their gills then the Inner Sounds should be diveable. Water temp is dropping slowly reaching 14 degrees now. I went for a bit of a look for some new local dive sites the other day and found a few potential sites that had surprisingly good visibility, up to 10 metres, and in an area that you would not expect.

Any how have a good weekend.

PICTON FORESHORE DEVELOPMENT

Friday, May 8th, 2009

After years of consultation and endless expense in employing designers to come up with a workable solution to Pictons Foreshore and Tourist Center, work has finally started. These are exciting times for Picton, there’s no sign of the recession here.

Aim is to have the new facilities up and running by October, ready for the summer. Existing Water Taxi and Adventure business have relocated for the time being, with one or two new operators taking advantage of the new facilities and moving in when the time comes.

The new area will be open plan with plenty of space for the public to move around in and will be an extension of the already very popular and beautiful Picton foreshore and beach.

Weather this weekend looks a bit dismal, with the forecast talking of snow down to 800 metres in some parts of region, I am glad I live at sea level. Looks like Inner Sounds diving again, advantage of the changing season though is better vis.

Some of us head off on overseas dive holidays to warmer locations. Steve and Georgie, Dive Club Marlborough members are off to Rarotonga next week, lucky buggers. Have a good time guys and watch out for this big fellow at Sand River.

Rust Weekend

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

May 16/17 is our end of summer Rust weekend. Although primarily crewed by Advanced Technical divers we do have a couple of places left and happy to take along divers with Advanced qualifications that are good to to dive the wrecks without me guiding them.

The Mikhail Lermontov will be our primary wreck, but we hope to get on to the Lastingham and Rangitoto for  few dives as well. Our dive platform will be our fast and comfortable 12 metre Seamaster.

Call me on 0800GODIVE if you are keen, limited spaces so be quick.

Cheers Brent

GOOD WEATHER FOR THE DUCKS (SHOOTERS)

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Well its the opening of the Duck Shooting season tomorrow and unfortunately for the ducks as well as us divers the weather is against us.

Low cloud, wind and rain tends to keep Donald flying low which is good for all the Rambo’s hiding in their ‘Miami’s" but not to good for Donald and his family, as they will be in range of those big tubes that make a loud bang.

For us divers it won’t be to good out either, the weather has been wet and windy for a week now, so vis is down a bit and sea conditions out further are a bit lumpy. Unless your real keen then probably best to stay dry for the weekend.

Club dive schedule has been updated and posted on the club events page so check that out. Also have a tech dive trip scheduled for May 16, if you are keen.

This week has been a busy one for Go Dive as we have just moved out of our shop in Waikawa and put it into storage for a short time while we set up our new facility.

I will give you a full report on this shortly, its going to be a exciting move and have some real advantages for club members and customers.
